Khadi clothes care: how to keep Gandhi ji’s fabric looking its best
Hand-spun and handwoven, khadi needs a little more patience than everyday cotton. Here’s how to wash, iron and store it so it lasts for years.
In short
- Gandhi Jayanti 2026 falls on Friday, 2 October.
- Soak new khadi in cold water before the first wash, because it shrinks slightly and releases dye.
- Wash cotton khadi cold and gently, dry it in the shade, and iron it while slightly damp.

- Spin Bee offers free pickup and drop with no minimum order.
Khadi clothes care: how do you look after khadi?
To take care of khadi clothes, soak new garments in cold water before the first wash, then wash cotton khadi in cold water with a mild detergent, separately from other clothes for the first few washes. Don’t wring or twist it, dry it inside out in the shade, and iron it on a medium-high setting while still slightly damp. Never use bleach or hot water. Silk khadi, wool khadi, embroidered pieces and khadi jackets should be dry cleaned, because water and agitation can shrink, fade or misshape them. Store khadi clean and dry, wrapped in cotton cloth rather than plastic.

Why khadi clothes care is different
For Gandhi ji, khadi was never just cloth. It stood for self-reliance, for the spinner’s work, and for buying what your own country makes. More than a century later, a crisp khadi kurta is still what many of us wear to school functions, flag hoisting and family occasions.
Because khadi is spun and woven by hand, the yarn is uneven and the weave is looser than mill cloth. That’s what makes it breathe so well in summer and stay warm in winter. It’s also why khadi behaves differently in water, heat and sunlight, and why everyday laundry habits can shrink it, fade it or wear it thin.
How to wash khadi: a simple khadi clothes care routine
- Soak it before the first washLeave a new khadi garment in cold water for an hour or two. This lets it shrink and release extra dye before you wear it.
- Wash cold, gentle and separatelyUse cold water and a mild liquid detergent. Wash khadi on its own, or with similar colours, for the first few washes. Never use bleach.
- Don’t wring or twistPress water out gently, or roll the garment in a towel. Twisting stretches the hand-spun yarn.
- Dry inside out in the shadeStrong sun fades natural dyes. Hang khadi inside out in a shaded, airy spot.
- Iron while slightly dampUse a medium-high setting for cotton khadi and iron inside out. A light starch keeps kurtas crisp.

Storing khadi: khadi clothes care for the long run
- Store khadi only when it’s completely clean and dry, because sweat and food marks turn yellow in storage.
- Wrap special pieces in a soft cotton cloth instead of plastic, so the fabric can breathe.
- Refold every few months along different lines.
- Keep neem leaves or cloth pouches of dried herbs nearby, rather than putting naphthalene in direct contact.
Khadi jackets and silk khadi are worth getting professionally cleaned before the winter wedding season. They hold their shape better and come back pressed and ready to wear.
Swachh Bharat starts at home, and khadi clothes care is part of it
2 October is also Swachh Bharat Diwas and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti. Gandhi ji called cleanliness a part of everyday life, and caring well for the clothes you already own fits that idea: you buy less, waste less and keep good things longer.

FAQs on khadi clothes care
Does khadi shrink after washing?
Yes, cotton khadi usually shrinks a little in the first one or two washes because it is handspun and handwoven. Soak it in cold water before the first wash and avoid hot water and machine drying.
Can khadi be washed in a washing machine?
Cotton khadi can go in a machine on a gentle, cold cycle inside a mesh bag, washed separately for the first few washes. Silk khadi, wool khadi and khadi jackets should be dry cleaned.
Why does my khadi kurta lose colour?
Khadi is often dyed with natural or vegetable dyes that release colour in the first few washes. Wash it separately in cold water with a mild detergent and dry it inside out in the shade.
How should khadi be ironed?
Iron cotton khadi while it is still slightly damp, on a medium-high setting, inside out. A light starch keeps kurtas crisp. Silk khadi needs a low setting with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.
Does SpinBee clean khadi?
Yes. SpinBee cleans and presses khadi kurtas, sarees, jackets and shawls, including silk and wool khadi, with free pickup and drop and no minimum order.
